(Raw Text:)

hello again friends and listeners and thank you for joining me I'm pastor Visser of the covenant peoples outreach and thank you for joining me for what is the twelfth part of our long-running series looking at the letter of Paul the Apostle to the Galatians and if you were with me about a week ago we left off in Galatians part five verse 11 where Paul says and I brethren if I yet preach circumcision why do i yet suffer persecution then it's the offense of the Cross ceased now this teaching is quite important in fact Paul devotes a good amount of time and this epistle talking about the differences between circumcision but do you know as well as I do that circumcision was commanded in the Levitical law it's in both Leviticus and Deuteronomy and short it's considered the law of God and be that as it may there are still many people who have a problem in spiritually applying the teachings of the New Testament and that if you will is the girth of what Paul is discussing in Galatians not so much the act of removing the foreskin off of your member but purging particular members from amongst the body of Christ and so I think you will see as we go through the next set of passages that that most assuredly is the case after he says the offense of the cross has ceased he continues in verse 12 he says I would they were even cut off which trouble you now notice the context of Galatians chapter 5 a circumcision and Peter even would come in and say you must be circumcised to be saved but is that what the Mosaic law said not at all in fact it number one said if you're circumcised you will be justified through that act or that adherence to God's law but notice the context is circumcision and Paul says I wish that there were particular men amongst your congregation that would be cut off from among you and so I ask you what is greater being circumcised in the flesh or circumsized within the spirit and it is that spiritual aspect of the New Testament in my opinion that also many of our people struggle with he says I would they were even cut off which trouble you now I believe we actually covered this in one of these parts in Galatians but turn with me to Acts chapter 15 beginning in verse 1 Paul says certain men which came down from Judea taught the Brethren and said except you be circumcised after the manner of Moses you cannot be saved now let's establish something right now this is something that Paul had to deal with and notice these are elders these are brethren these are our own kinsmen the faithful and they would come in from the land of Judea and they would tell new Christian converts that unless they were circumcised in the flesh they wouldn't be saved that's an outright lie because nowhere in the provision of God's law did he ever or Moses even ever say that if you're circumcised you'll be saved now why is this important because we within this movement still have particular men crept in unawares whose mouths must be silenced according to Paul that teach you must be circumcised to be saved a complete life so we're not going to spend a lot of time in acts 15 because we've covered it in this series on Galatians but Peter was amongst those men of Judea who came in remember it was Paul who set the converts in every city that he went to now last week in this particular series I pointed out that some men come to me and they say hey you know what I'm older than you I'm your elder but that's not what Paul says an elder is and if you don't believe me turn with me very quickly just to digress and prove my point that I brought up last week in Titus chapter 1 verse 5 Paul tells Titus for this cause the left ivy and Crete that thou should have set and order the things that are wanting and to ordain elders in every city just as I have appointed thee now Paul appointed Titus and he appointed Titus as an elder of that church for a particular reason verse 6 provides that ki an elder must be if any be blameless the husband of one wife having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly now at first glance that may seem like a digression but I actually placed that particular quote from Titus there for good reason just because a particular person comes and says you know what I'm older than you doesn't mean by default there your elder an elder fulfills what is outlined by Paul and what Titus himself fulfilled in the first chapter of Titus so was Peter an elder indeed he was but it didn't stop him from coming in after being set free in the liberty of Christ's blood and telling new Christians that you had to be circumcised according to the law to be saved not sure and so back here in Galatians back here in chapter 5 notice Paul continues on in verse 13 by saying for brethren ye have been called unto Liberty only use not Liberty for an occasion to the flesh but by love serve one another what's that mean that means everything we do as the Christian body should be driven by our love for our neighbor because after all there was Christ who taught in observing the golden rule in doing good unto others we have fulfilled all the law and all the prophets no understanding that the law was a schoolmaster to bring you to Christ who's greater Paul who sets you free from that very law meaning that you no longer are justified through it you're not indebted to do the entirety of the law you don't have to go and sacrifice animals anymore or the man who comes in and says you know what you got to follow God's law to be saved nothing you can do there is no works-based doctrine that can save you now there's a few places I'd like to examine based on what we just covered in Galatians chapter 5 verse 13 the first place is Paul's first letter to the Corinthians but chapter 8 it is here where Paul says take heed lest by any means this Liberty of yours become a stumbling-block to them that are weak and what does that mean that means men who are weak if you come in oftentimes and tell them hey you're set free from the law of bondage and death they usually will go out and do the opposite don't engage in sin and that's exactly what Paul saying here and what we're about to move into many people hide behind the law of Moses and the only thing we are to retreat behind is the shield of faith according to the final chapter of Ephesians but try as they will when men hide behind the law it doesn't mean they're justified through the works of the law and oftentimes men who used the law to hide behind will then attack their own brother which ironically if we do good to our neighbor or our brother is the fulfillment of the entirety of the law don't believe me well consider one more statement while you're here in 1st Corinthians but this time chapter 9 and we learn here beginning in verse 9 for though Paul says in verse 19 for though I be made free from all men I have made myself a servant to all the supping right there Christ was a servant to all and therefore you should be able to see that a man in servitude to his neighbor is God and his nation is greater than a man who comes in as a Pharisee does using Leviticus and Deuteronomy to hold men in bondage by saying for example you must be circumcised within the flesh so many things can be said about this one more point I'd like to make turn with me to the book of Romans while we actually examine chapter or verse 13 here in chapter 5 right at the very beginning of chapter 6 Paul says this what shall we say then shall we continue in sin that grace may abound god forbid how shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein now that's exactly Paul's point that he's making to the foolish Galatians at no point does he come in and say don't follow the law but at practically every point he says you're not saved by the law you're only saved through as we just covered grace or Bercy why because you can do nothing to earn your position within the coming Kingdom and I mean nothing you can be called you can be chosen you could be a sheep or a goat but at the end of the day there's no guarantee that anything you do will obtain you entrance now there are things that come close to them why doing good to those who persecute you esteeming every man better than ourselves and observing the aforementioned golden rule so let's pick it back up in galatians chapter 5 notice after he says you've been called unto Liberty but don't use the Liberty that you have for an occasion to fulfill the desires of the flesh he says in verse 14 for all of the law is fulfilled in one word meaning one statement what do you think before we actually get to it in verse 14 all of the law is fulfilled within or summed up upon well let's see Paul says all the law is fulfilled in one word in this thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself know many of you about this time will be coming in and saying well you know what that was taught by Christ but that was never the Mosaic law Paul was a Jew D Iser or so many people erroneously believed but I'd like to prove several points about this this may be in many ways an oversimplification but notice the teaching is not only just to love your neighbor or Clary o someone who shares the same womb or pedigree as you but you're to love them as you do yourself right there is the key as to true love most of us will love ourselves will tend to our own flesh we'll take care of our own needs before we do our neighbor or our kinsfolk but at the end of the day Paul says all of the law is fulfilled in this what does that mean that means if you have a lifetime of abstaining from murder stealing and not eating unclean that will not save you in contrast or when you stand next to the man who loved his neighbor as himself something very very hard for us to do the Israelite men women and children love a particular person like we do ourselves you understand the statement now turn with me as we prove that Paul learned this from Jesus Christ to the Gospel according to Matthew and in Matthew chapter 7 this is very important these are the red letters of Jesus Christ and for the men who come in and say well Paul is just changing the Mosaic law you'll see here in a moment that's not the case neither did Christ in Matthew chapter 7 he says beginning in verse 12 therefore all things whatsoever ye would or desire that men should do unto you do ye even so unto them for this is the law and the prophets meaning the fulfillment thereof so was Paul teaching anything new not at all but he was teaching what Emmanuel Christ taught his disciples the law is not as great as doing good unto your neighbor should be common sense consider another statement it's here in the Gospel according to Matthew but it's found in the 22nd chapter roundabout verse 39 this is what we learned Jesus said unto his disciples thou shalt love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul and with all your mind that's the first commandment did Christ add that to the law not at all it's found in Deuteronomy chapter 6 verse 5 but he continues in verse 38 this is the first and greatest commandment what loving God Yahweh with your entire psyche and the fiber of your being but what's the second and the second is like unto it Christ says thou shall love your neighbor as yourself on these two Commandments hang all the law and the prophets what is Christ saying doesn't matter how good you think you fulfill the Mosaic law you don't love God and don't love God's children you're not fulfilling the law because the entire law is contingent upon those two Commandments that Christ brought now before men come in and say well pastor miseries teaching a little bit too much New Testament I want to prove one more thing before we move on from Leviticus chapter 19 pay close attention beginning in verse 16 of Leviticus 19 law of Moses says thou Israelite man woman or child shall not go up and down as a tail bearer among your people neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbor for I am Yahweh thou shall not hate your brother in thine heart thou shalt not in any wise rebuke thy neighbor and suffer anything upon him thou shalt not avenge nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people neighbor but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself for I am Yahweh so before we move on let's establish that Paul wasn't teaching anything new he was teaching the Mosaic law and that's quite ironic is it not because many people come in and they attack Paul and they say you know what he did everything he could do to preach universalism is he here no did the Mosaic law know the law said you shall not bear a grudge or avenge the blood of your neighbor specifically Christ said that the entirety of the law was contingent on two acts or attributes that the Israelite men women and children will possess the ability to love God and the ability to love one another and why is that so important because it should be common sense but if a person does not have the ability to love everything else he says is that's nothing it says tumbling brass call says so let's pick back up our study now that we have established that the golden rule on how it fulfills the entirety of the law back in verse 15 and this is very very important especially in light of the last two weeks and its events and if anything today in part twelve on our look at Galatians you take away from this lecture let it be verse 15 pay close attention he says all of this he says don't fight amongst yourselves don't fight over the wall do good to one another but then he gives this warning in verse 15 he says but excuse me we've been sick here in Georgia for about 24 hours just a small bug because of the rain and the weather and my heart really goes out to our kins folks that are being affected by this tornado this weather but verse 15 says this but if you bite and devour one another take heed that you're not consumed one of another now that verse so very important because oftentimes we within the faith like to point the finger at the enemies of Christians and as I have said from this very pulpit countless times we usually are our own worst nightmare our own enemy and it's because of this because particular men want to have the glory that is due God then what they do usually by default is come in and attack the meek preacher and what happens in that process is a devour one another many people on the last couple of have been blaming the children of Satan for the down Paulet auction but it wasn't the enemies of Christendom that did it there was another professed brother devouring and trying to compete so what is Paul saying he says be careful because he knows that there is an occasion that there will be disputes there will be murmuring but if you go and attempt to destroy one another you will be destroyed within that process why well Christ clearly taught that we reap what we sow and if we sow seeds of discord for example you're gonna reap discord so many of the things that we've been seeing in the last couple of weeks is because of particular men professed brethren who go by our title but behind the scenes they're reporting people to Facebook the reporting people's bank accounts the reporting people at their jobs Paul says be very very careful of this if you bite and devour meaning Paul doesn't say that it's wrong to do it but if you do take heed in that process that you're not consumed one of another perhaps you know the analogy but probably two men could be fighting if one says I'll call the police the other goes and rushes to beat them to calling the police when the first man never did call the police there's a perfect example of being consumed biting and destroyed through backbiting bickering and arguing there's many other allegories I could give right here but if you're going to take your faith in your hand once again and you're going to use it to bite and devour what you perceive as your enemy amongst your own brethren there is a great possibility that in that process God's gonna pour out on your head what you wished for your enemy or your brethren in this context so be very careful because we right now I believe can destroy ourselves and in many ways we are destroying ourselves because there's men who can't esteem every other Israelite better than themselves there's men who can't get along peaceably and therefore they bite they devour one another and that's one of the reasons I've stepped away from several venues that I've worked on in the past I'm not going to be privy to it if we glory when are supposing white enemy is destroyed God will destroy us why we have already covered it today and I know I'm spending time here but if a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump and the entirety of the law is fulfilled by loving God and loving our brethren there's no room for me herself now you should be able to notice that in the preachers you listen to some do what they do because they're light of God and want to give God the glory they want to give their nation their brethren that's glory and seek no glory for themselves but then there are others who come to this movement who really shouldn't be even considered faithful at all because they hide behind the law as Peter did an attack those that are in the spirit much greater to walk in the spirit how can I say that let's continue our study in Galatians 5 but verse 16 Paul says this I say then walk in the spirit and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh now here momentarily we're going to be looking at two characteristics one of the righteous one of the wicked number one when we're going to be looking at time allowing are the works of the flesh number two however we're going to be looking at the fruit of the Spirit both are exact polar opposites my friend now here in a moment Paul is about to go through all the works of the flesh and as I have established today and given you the foundation do not use the Liberty from God's Mosaic law as a stumbling block here's how you know and this requires discernment notice first and foremost the only way to not fulfill the lust meaning desires of the flesh is to walk within the spirit what does that mean well I've done many studies on abiding within the spirit and if you were with me a week ago for part 11 you know that I confirmed that Yahweh God his spirit and we must worship Him in spirit and truth and so to oversimplify the biggest difference between the old and new testament suspected too old dealt with sinful men sinful flesh and covenants or promises that pertained unto the flesh whereas the New Testament deals with the fruits of the spirit or our Christian walk now over time you should be able to see how many people do come and go that is to Christendom in general and the only way you'll know who is true and who is not is by using the god-given discernment that you're given now he's going to go through the list but before we actually look at it turn with me again to Romans chapter 6 the very important statement in light of this walk in the spirit Paul says here in Galatians and then you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh therefore in Romans chapter 6 he says beginning in verse 12 Paul Paul speaking let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body that you should obey it and the lusts thereof neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin but yield yourselves unto God as those who are life from the dead and your members as instruments of righteousness now perhaps you don't need me to point out that Paul uses in Ephesians especially chapter 1 the body of Christ as an allegory for the Christian body meaning that the members of the aren't literal flesh and blood they are they who walk within the spirit but that doesn't stop contentions from arising where men come in and say hey you need to cut off the foreskin of your member but yet Paul is saying right here in Romans that we need to cut off particular members from the body of Christ now why is that well it's common sense a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump if you allow a nun pure person into the body of Christ he will corrupt the entirety of that Christian body thus was the case and the story of Peter and Paul in the book of Acts and Galatians Peter would come in say go back to the Old Testament law but yet Christ taught him that he was free from that law and he had Liberty but notice Peter was a doubter he doubted three times before the cock even crew and then after the fact when he was being tried many men came to Peter and they said hey aren't you a friend of that king of Israel and he'd say no I don't know so it stands to reason that after Christ's bodily ascended to be with Yahweh God he would come back into the Christian body and he would say hey you need to be circumcised and never understanding that Peter and those men that we covered today in the book of Romans that came from Judea and said you must be circumcised to be saved were the members or the proverbial foreskin that needed to be cut out of the Christian body and so I stand on that my friends many people come in and say I'm an older no they're not read Titus chapter one it'll tell you what an elder is many men come in they say hey I'm a preacher I'm a bishop no they're not read Paul's admonitions and then when you're done with that time allowing perhaps we'll look at it go back to the law go back to Leviticus and see what Yahweh God deems a Levitical priest or a preacher or supposed to be now the litmus test is true do you love the word or do you love the traditions of men circumcision is most undoubtedly a tradition and a tradition that has been done away within Christ why obviously it was a blood ritual it dealt with an ordinance not the law of de facto but an ordinance dealing with blood rituals that Christ fulfilled Christ shed his blood so you don't need to be circumcised Christ shed his blood so you don't need to go every week to an high priest and tell them hey they need to make us any tournament now bat in so many ways is understood by the majority of Christendom however we who are prone omean and believe that the law is eternal run the risk like Peter did of going back to the law and thinking you're justified through the law that would never justify you very important to understand walk in the spirit you won't fulfill the lusts thereof why verse 17 Paul says for the flesh lusts against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh these are contrary one to the other so that you cannot do the things that she would what is contrary flesh spirit so there is a spirit lead man so also are there men and women who were led around by the dictates of the flesh which is flesh which is sense basically and he's going to go through them here momentarily the works of the flesh but the flesh itself that we find ourselves within automatically wars against the spirit and that is the duality or the dichotomy of man and how we struggle we have to live within the flesh but we're supposed to walk within the spirit and if we don't walk within the holy spirit of Yahweh God we're going to seek to fulfill the lusts of the flesh so a couple places I'd like to skip around turn with me back to Romans we're gonna look at a statement Paul makes here in Romans chapter 7 but verse 18 Paul says for I know that in me that is within my flesh dwelleth no good thing for to will is present in me but how to perform that which is good I find not do you understand what we're getting to here your flush is never going to come in and dictate to you how to walk within the spirit but it will come in and tell you hey don't eat this particular food and don't go around these particular Samaritans and it will come in and it will tell you oftentimes through ego hey you're a little greater than that particular person that sinner right who transgresses God's law for all it's the only biblical definition of sin that is to do good and do it not and to violate God's law both of which are the biblical definition of sin but Paul doesn't say if you walk in the flesh you're ever going to find the spirit in fact it's the opposite and so the old war continues to wage doesn't matter what a man's title is it doesn't matter if he claims to be something that he's not the only way you'll know is through discernment and Paul tells the Galatians here how to know who walks in the flesh who walks in the spirit and I hope that you will be walking within the spirit another thing I'd like you to consider as we're looking at this we just covered Romans correct about Romans chapter 7 where we are but verse 15 Paul says for that which I do I allow not for what I would that I do not for that what I hate I do it then I do that which I would not I consent unto the law that it is good meaning I agree that the law is good what is Paul saying what he's about to say here in Galatians or mattis basically this and what I said in the last segment you walk in the spirit technically the law will not avail you just like he said if you're circumcised Christ will profit you nothing those who walk in the spirit already understand the law because the law was meant to be spiritually applied the first place but men who only see the flesh will oftentimes hide behind below use the law as a cloak of maliciousness or a stumbling block to put people away from the truth don't believe me well consider verse 18 here in Galatians chapter 5 but Paul says if you be led of the Spirit you're not under the law you want to be free from the law of sin and death be led of the Holy Spirit now as time is getting away from me we're probably not going to be able to get to it so we'll go through it very quickly here skip forward here in Galatians 5 to verse 22 Paul says here the fruit of the Spirit is love joy peace long-suffering gentleness goodness faith meekness temperance and against such there is no law now contrast that and compare it to what he is about to say are the works of the flesh but in the next verse verse 19 now the works of the flesh are manifest Paul is about to tell you how to know who is led around by his physical member not this P remember spiritual members of the body of Christ are our neighbor to whom we must do good unto but literal members of the body of Christ would be what means Christ's body he's the head so you should be able to see what we're getting to verse 19 the works of the flesh are manifest that means for you to understand and they are these adultery fornication uncleanness and lasciviousness we're going to stop right there for a moment but in this is Paul saying don't follow the law and now what are you saying is these are the works of the flesh and it should sound a bit familiar to you actually turn with me to Romans for the final time today and we're going to take a look at what Paul says in Chapter 1 perhaps you've heard this quoted before because it actually deals with men and women who do not like to retain God's law within their knowledge verse 28 of Romans chapter 1 also written by Paul he says even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge God gave them over to a reprobate mind to do those things which are not convenient being filled with all unrighteousness fornication wickedness covetousness maliciousness envy murder debate deceit malignity whisperers backbiters haters of god despiteful proud boasters inventors of evil things disobedient to parents without understanding covenantbreakers without natural affection meaning they have an unnatural affection and placeable unmerciful who knowing the judgment of God that they which commit such things are worthy of death not only do the same but they have pleasure and those that do them why would they have pleasure and those who seek to fulfill the works of the flesh well oftentimes misery does love company the birds of a feather truly do flock together but notice this is how you know number one the word is adultery which means adulteration on any level you can adulterate of fabric you can adulterate your bloodline and so also can you adulterate the marriage vent by cheating on your spouse number two fornication meaning they don't agree with marriage they're usually the ones who will come in and say well Bishop doesn't need to be married as we confirm today from Titus chapter 1 and an elder for that matter and of course fornication as a Greek word and this will be your homework for the week means pornea it is where we derive our modern-day term pornography or porno from the Greek word porneia or fornication so common sense men who desire to go after porn men who go after adulteration or even adultery of the marriage bed or let around by what the works of the flesh what's the third uncleanliness what puts a difference between the clean and the unclean God's law so notice that is the reason why I took you to Romans chapter 1 to confirm some of these works of the flesh first the act is the man says I don't want to retain God in my knowledge neither do I want to follow his law Old Testament or new then God gives them the desires of their heart which I might interject denotes grace and mercy to do the things which are unconvenient the works of the flesh that's all they get now how can you fulfill the entirety of the law by doing good what's the fourth lasciviousness continuing on to verse 20 I know three witchcraft hatred variance emulations wrath strife seditions heresies envyings murders drunkenness revellings Paul says and suchlike of the which I tell you before as I have told you in times past that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God they which do what things fulfill the works of the flesh and they're all outlined right there and in the first chapter of Romans so you are without excuse remember Christ the Living Word clearly said I ever told you all things you reckon for a moment it's right here within the Word of God so when a man comes to you and says hey will a witch or a hater or a man who is wrathful and continually creating strife will he be found within the kingdom short answer is no Paul already said it they which do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God that's exactly what he said in the very first chapter of Romans and so I hope today study has that if I'd you I'll be back with you in less than a week as usual for the continuation of our study here which I believe is lucky number part 13 so be sure to join me then and until then this is pastor Visser from the covenant people's church wishing you and your entire family war for Christ
