Introduction
by C. O. Stadsklev
Several years ago while preaching in Baltimore a remarkable little book came to my attention. This book contains two sermons delivered by Rev. F. E. Pitts of Nashville, Tennessee. These sermons were delivered by Rev. Pitts in the Capital of the United States at the request of several members of Congress on the anniversary of Washington's birthday in 1857. The two addresses were entitled "Our Great Country Foretold in The Holy Scriptures" and "A Defence of Armageddon."
Our purpose in reprinting these two sermons by Rev. Pitts must be self-evident to everyone who is familiar with our teaching concerning the identity and destiny of the United States of America. Our delight in discovering that a great host of people, including congressmen and such ministers as Rev. F. E. Pitts, believed and taught more than a hundred years ago what we are preaching and teaching concerning our nation must also be apparent to all.
The two forewords found in this book give the reader the necessary introductions to Rev. Pitts' sermons on the United States. There are, however, a few suggestions that might be helpful and enable the reader to more fully understand and appreciate Rev. Pitts' position.
For instance, it would perhaps seem to us living today that he was unduly severe toward Great Britain; and had Rev. Pitts been living today he undoubtedly would have used the words dictator and dictatorship where he used the words monarchy and autocracy.
The most startling and significant thing about Rev. Pitts' teaching is that he could see the identity and Divinely determined destiny of our nation without the knowledge that the Anglo-Saxons are the literal descendants of the Israel people and without being aware of the true identity of the British Throne.
The following is a quotation from Rev. Pitts' morning message on February 22, 1857 at the national Capitol: "The United States of America is the nationality that is promised in the prophetic Scriptures to arise in the latter times as Israel Restored."
Two brief quotations from Rev. Pitts' message in the afternoon of the same day in 1857 will challenge any reader interested in Bible prophecy:
"The land to be invaded is, in the foregoing quotation, a literal and true description of the United States."
"The battlefield—the Valley of the Mississippi."
