(Raw Text:)

hello again dear friends and thank you for joining me I'm pastor Visser of the covenant peoples church and ministry located in beautiful Brooks Georgia and today we're going to continue in our long-running series looking at the letter of Paul the Apostle to the Galatians and the reason we're staying in this New Testament book of Galatians is because I feel personally that if we could apply Paul's teachings in this book pertaining to Christian living then we can circumvent and avoid many woes that are guaranteed to be poured out upon an unruly and disobedient children such as we are so many things have been taught in this series so far that perhaps I'll even do a supplementary lecture in Galatians as I've done series past looking at some of the particulars because Paul even had dispute in this book with Peter and Peter was one of the called by Christ correct he would come in and he would teach circumcision and Paul would come in and basically say that whether you're circumcised or not it's not going to avail you and Christ and my friends you will see from today's lecture that what Paul teaches is applicable today I know it is in my life in the last part part 10 we left off on one of the most powerful statements I believe that Paul makes and that is found in verse 26 where he says Jerusalem which is above is free which is the mother of us all now over and over in this book of Galatians Paul has to remind these foolish Gentiles that they're so easily removed so easily bewitched to go back according to the flesh and the law that governs that flesh for example picking our study back up won't begin today where we left off in part 10 verse 29 Paul says he that is born after the flesh persecutes him that is born after the spirit even so it is until now my friends if you think for a moment that it's not still that way that those that can only see the flesh or born only according to the flesh they walk and fulfill the desires thereof don't attack those that follow the spirit now important things need to be established Yahweh God is spirit those that worship Him have two requirements you must worship Him in spirit and truth but notice you can't worship or heavenly father in the flesh it's impossible you have to worship Him in the spirit and therefore those that can only see the flesh or glory within it usually come in and give the spiritual that's you and I much grief so it was Peter was drawn back according to the flesh to the Mosaic law I would come in and tell new converts to Christianity that they had to actually cut the foreskin off of their member in order to be accepted by Yahweh God and of course Paul would withstand Peter and that so with that groundwork being established this should make sense to you the conclusion of Galatians chapter 4 where we pick it back up in verse 30 nevertheless what says scripture stopping right there now already we've confirmed that Yahweh God is spirit and those that worship Him have to worship Him in spirit and truth and it actually makes perfect sense because the New Testament is spiritually applied and it deals with the spiritual walk it is the same book of Galatians that Paul woods tell them that he was amazed that they would begin in the spirit and then ultimately work back unto the flesh that outward sign or token known as circumcision and thus we find ourselves today there are men even professing to be Christian that are truly not spirit filled they can only see the flush and just like Peter they need to be rebuked now what we're moving in to here deals with the topic of circumcision but it doesn't deal with the removal of a foreskin for example verse 9 Paul says a little leaven leaveneth the whole up so we need to purge leaven from our life correct and much often times leaven can come under the guise of hey you need to go back to the law number one the law is not truth the law is truthful but nowhere in the law is it the be-all end-all of truth Christ as I am the way the truth and the life and even says in John 17:17 that the Word of God is true so to worship God in spirit and truth number one you must be of the spirit or a part of the body of Christ number two you must define what is truth Paul begins verse 30 by saying nevertheless what says the scripture and I'm spending time here because oftentimes we as the men and women of Yahweh God usually say well what would dr. so-and-so say what would pastors so-and-so say but at the end of the day what does scripture say should be common sense that if Paul says a bishop must be something and a man comes in and says well Paul's lying we must go with Paul because Paul's truth bound within the Word of God what says the scripture now this is what Paul is going to say cast out the bondwoman and her son for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free ball so Paul again continues on what we covered in part 10 and that is that Hegel and Sarah were meant to be an allegory one born according to promise the Israelite race if you will and one born according to the flesh but notice he puts a difference here he says that the son of the bondwoman meaning the son of Hagar the Ishmaelites will not be heir with the son of the freewoman which is Jacob Israel and his descendants so even Paul is putting a difference between not only classes of men and women but putting a difference between circumcision what is greater again I asked circumcision of the flesh or circumcision of the heart which is exactly what he's talking about here purge yourself so we're gonna move into that but he ends chapter three or four by saying so then brethren we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free now so much can be taught from that but the law itself was given unto sinful man that should be apparent from the narrative the Israelites were disobedient over and over and over again and therefore God was commissioned to give a law and God gave that law through Moses the lawgiver and then like now you had some who would come in and say you know what I follow belong perfectly and ironically didn't keep any of it and then you had others who don't glory within the law but understand that even the law was spiritually applied what I'm getting to is what is greater grace or the law of God which is truth which will save you the answer is mercy or grace never the law murphy's it's 2:8 which we covered this year in addition to Galatians here clearly says that we're saved by grace through things so faith is much greater than obedient to the law because just as Christ talked in his parable of the husbandmen at the return of the king he doesn't come in and thank the servant for doing that which is commanded okay but the way of man oftentimes this to think well I'm keeping the law and doing God the favor it's not how it works my friend grace is always greater so then brethren we are not children of the bondwoman what is Paul talking about basically saying that going back to the law when you are already of the Spirit which is supposed to be wearing finish not begin it's like a dog going back to vomit in short so we're going to move in because we more than adamantly covered Galatians chapter four to chapter five and so much can be taught pay close attention he says in verse one stand fast therefore in the Liberty wherewith Christ has made us free and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage now here in a moment we're going to do a little skipping around so I can prove several points but notice in context just as I said Paul is talking about the law not that the law it's not absolute moral and wholesome but that the law is not 100% truth and that the law will not save you now many Pharisees follow the law but even Christ would come in and say oftentimes in his own parables that the tax collector will go home justified because of the proper spirit Peter began in the spirit walking with Christ but it didn't stop the pressures of the world or the fear of the religious order at his time from coming in and making Peter turn back from what he knew what he was set free per the Liberty okay now I keep stressing on this over over and over because we're only free through what the truth the same thing that we worship Yahweh God in you shall know the truth the truth shall set you free but what of the law is truth de-facto simple question think about it it's truthful that if a man sins he will die it's truthful that there is a difference between the righteous and the habitually sinful but what's not true is that if you follow the law 100% it's a blueprint for salvation salvation becomes not from the blood of animals my friend salvation comes from the blood that was shed on Calvary by Jesus to Christ now that doesn't stop many people from coming in taking you away from the spirit now understand that the preaching of the Cross or even the gospel is foolishness to them that perish and so it stands today and even in the last couple of weeks with particular people that I've had to deal with they can only see the flesh because they're children of the bondwoman but the children of the free the children of the free or the Israelites know that from that same bloodline sprang Yahshua who would be the ultimate Messiah who would set you free from the law of bondage and death as Paul puts it in Galatians so he says Christ has made us free but don't be entangled therein by the yoke of bondage now did not Christ clearly say that my yoke is light indeed he did so Christ truly did come to set free the captives who were held captive to what though just a bigger question so turn with me to Philippians I really like Philippians because in the last week or so I've had many people and because there are a few years older than me say hey you know you need to respect your elders just book Philippians that explains what an elder is supposed to be but I want you to consider a statement before we even look at that as its found in Philippians chapter 4 but verse 1 Paul says therefore my brethren dearly beloved and long for my joy and my crown so stand fast in the Lord my dearly beloved I entreat thee also true yoke fellow help those women which laboured with me in the gospel and in the book of life life is not found in the Old Testament you're judged according to the law all men are sinners and you will die you will perish that is why there is no partiality in judgment and why only grace will save you through faith because it depends and is contingent on your belief in Christ but Philippians goes through these things it's a beautiful book and perhaps we'll look at it more in the future but understand he says appoint fellow elders if any be blameless if any be the husband of one wife if any half children so we're not going to spend time on that today but an elder fulfills the three prerequisites that I covered in blameless bishops and therefore I'll never relent from that particular sermon because it wasn't incorrect but that's a study for another day one more statement I'd like to look at before we move on here in the fifth chapter of Galatians turn with me to Acts chapter 15 here Luke at the bequest of Paul makes an awesome statement he says in chapter 15 but verse 10 therefore why tempt God to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers were able - they're exactly what I'm saying here the Israelites have all never fulfilled the law they never kept it 100% as far as I know from all the years of studying the Bible there was only one who did that Jesus Christ and that is why he fulfilled that law not do away with it but having fulfilled it with his atoning work on Calvary so the point is is if you go back to the law you're going back to what you believe it's justification by works or salvation through the law the law itself never said you were justified never said you'd be so saved from anything it only said that you would keep yourself on this rated now and in many ways the spiritual man or woman doesn't need the law to come in and tell them killings wrong stealing's wrong lying's wrong they know all of those things because the law is written on the heart how can the law be written on their heart unless circumcision is of the heart and that is why here momentarily Paul is going to go into a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump is leaven bad not at all leaven is used in winemaking it's a great purifying age but the teaching is is something very small like circumcision can become something big and it can spliter a Christian body and so we're going to continue to see that as we go into our apostasy enough on that verse - in Galatians chapter 5 behold I Paul say unto you that if you be circumcised Christ shall profit you nothing now that one verse Galatians 5:2 in the hands of a false prophet can be very detrimental think about it all they have to do is come in and say well you're circumcised so Christ isn't going to profit you anything but is that what Paul is saying let's read and examine I Paul say unto you the Galatians in context if you be circumcised Christ shall profit you nothing why simple answer circumcision is of the heart it does you little good to circumcise your foreskin when you're not going to purge your life of the dead wood and the Judaizers who will come in and say hey you know what go back to the law that Christ sets you free from and remove you from the Liberty's back in Acts chapter 15 excuse me it's raining here in Georgia as you may well have noticed but verse 1 certain men which came down from Judea taught the Brethren and said except you be circumcised after the manner of Moses you cannot be saved when therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and dissipation with them they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain other of them should go to Jerusalem and inquire about this now we have most assuredly looked at this in depth but did the Mosaic law say you had to be circumcised to be saved no it said it was a good practice so the law still says so continuing on for I testify again Paul speaking in verse 3 to every man that is circumcised that he now is a debtor to do the entire law why is a man circumcised because it's commanded and usually because they feel that in doing what Yahweh God commands there are salvation within that and in many ways they're not wrong in that belief but notice Paul says I testified in every man that is circumcised in context to what salvation believing that the removal of piece of flesh will st. therefore Christ cannot profit them anything and not only that he's a debtor now meaning he's indebted to do the whole of the law which is an impossibility says the law itself so that's the point while all men are sinners if you seek to hide behind the law as opposed to the shield of faith as you're supposed to which comes only from the gospel truth but the penitent truth okay then you're gonna be no different Christ will become no effect unto you why he says it in the next verse verse 4 Christ has become of no effect unto you whosoever of you are justified by the law you are fallen from grace two points number one you can fall from grace undoubtedly many people will come in and say once saved always saved all you have to be as an Israelite right it's not taught in Scripture which taught in Scripture is all Israel is saved and without this book of Galatians you'll never never understand that a Gentile in belief has the power to be the sons of Abraham something to consider because an Adam I'd who believes in Christ is better in the eyes of Yahweh than an Israelite who obeys the law which is the whole duty of man what is greater belief meaning faith or observance of God's law Christ has or is become of no effect unto you that is if you think you're justified or saved by the law the law is lawful if it's used lawfully but there are many men who will come in and use the law unlawfully and usually in a vain attempt to explain away the very simple truth as Paul is saying here if you're circumcised Christ won't really profit you that is if you think you're justified as he continues in verse 4 and the second point is that again circumcision is of the heart a man can fall from grace what is Grace unmerited favor for lack of a better term it's something you cannot earn for your behavior for your adherence to the law its unmerited in its definition it's a gift of Yahweh God and if it is earned it is earned through faith according to the aforementioned Ephesians chapter 2 verse 8 but you can fall from that grace how like going back to the wall once grace is imputed and that's exactly what he's saying so this term fall from grace appears only here because once Christ gives you grace from the law of sin and death if you go back on to it Christ can't profit you and there's no greater way of going back onto it than saying hey you need to be circumcised in the flesh again what's greater circumcision of the flesh which is commanded by Mosaic law or circumcision of the heart which is purging our life from Deadwood something to consider now while we're here let's digress for a moment turn with me to Romans chapter 9 and we're going to read the thirty first verse Paul says Israel which followed after the law of righteousness has not attained unto the law of righteousness now the law was given to Israel and in many ways the Israelite men women and children are still the only people not follow the law but righteousness is a thing Paul clearly teaches it he says except the lord of the sabbath had left us a seed we would have been as sodom and we would have been as gomorrah what shall we say then that the Gentiles which followed not after righteousness that's the law have attained to righteousness even the righteousness which is of faith faith Trump's obedience to the law now in all of this Paul is not saying don't follow the law and I really want to drive that point home no more than I'm saying don't follow the law Paul is clearly saying you're not justified or saved through the law because the law had provisions if you messed up you would sack Faiza Bullock or a Turtledove Christ for one and all time laid down the ultimate sacrifice you should know this now one more point turn with me to second Peter this is the second letter or epistle of Peter and it's one of my favorites it's actually one of the epistles that I began the covenant people's church upon second Peter chapter 2 so it's fitting that we look at this and Durkins folk I'd also like to as I'm turning there and as you're turning there I'd also like to point out that in the upcoming two weeks we intend on putting a whole slew of back catalog releases out that we've been sitting upon and hopefully they'll edify you but in the third chapter of second Peter we learn in verse 17 Peter says ye therefore beloved seeing you know these things before beware lest ye also being led away with the error of the wicked fall from your own steadfastness but grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to him be glory both now and forever Peter says to the law no to Christ because he's set you free from that law now I'm spending a lot of time here because to me it's so ironic that when we begin in the spirit we can be drove back to the flesh by saying hey up all of the law it's not going to save you in the end may give you some bonus points that may store you up treasure in heaven but only belief upon Christ and I can't stress that fact enough so let's pick it back up in Galatians 5 verse 5 for we through the spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith not by the law now turn with me again to confirm what Paul saying here to Romans chapter 8 again and hopefully your fingers still there truly a great book Ephesians and Galatians if we as the Christian body could follow it the way we're supposed to we could mark the false prophets just like that nine times out of ten they hate Paul they hate the Pauline epistles and they attempt to explain it away they'll say well Paul wasn't married what does that have to do with the fact that Paul commands a bishop preacher must be blameless the husband of one wife some folks can't be reached my friend and I say glory to God turn with me to Romans chapter 8 it's a well-known chapter after all it is Romans chapter 8 verse 28 that clearly says all things work together for them who are the called and chosen according to God but have you ever considered a statement he makes in verse 24 we are saved by hope a polite way of saying faith did Paul say you're saved by the law no and who is he writing to the Romans who are Gentiles we are saved by hope but hope that is seen is not hope for what a man sees why does he yet hope for but if we hope for that what we see not then do we with patience wait for it so you should be able to see how that ties in right here we through the spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith it's what Paul says and I hope you're part of that Christian body my friends I hope you're not out there saying you know what I want to follow the law over the gospel so I'm going to allow men to come in and dismiss Paul mainly want to dismiss parts of the New Testament do so because they have a vested interest in doing so have a dog in the fight so all the more reason for you to be on guard mark them as violators Paul mark Peter in this book of Galatians Peter was called of Christ but it keep them perfect Paul once Paul understood the spirit Peter understood the flesh and that's apropos I believe some manuscripts don't put weight at all in Galatians chapter 5 verse 5 but they put eagerly waiting and I feel that's almost a better rendering we should all be eagerly awaiting the return of our bridegroom correct Jesus Christ who is going to be part of the latter marriage supper of the Lamb so when men come in and say well Christ wasn't married he's only considered the father for a reason perhaps because he has children continuing on in verse 6 for in Jesus Christ neither circumcision avails anything nor uncircumcision but faith which works by love now notice Paul didn't say don't be circumcised no more than Paul said if you're circumcised you can't be saved from the blood of Christ Paul says if you believe you're justified through the works of the flesh as opposed for faith and eagerly waiting on the hope to be revealed thus is the way of it now consider a statement it's found in first Corinthians it's on the same exact theme here and I feel that it fits in here pretty well actually and hopefully you guys can actually hear that rain it's coming down there sometimes it rains so hard in Georgia and I grew up in Los Angeles so what's interesting about that is it rarely rains in Southern California you've heard the song before anyway second Corinthians first Corinthians gives me my notes are out of sorts I haven't been live streaming if you as you've noticed and I'm sure you know that there's a reason for that verse 19 as any man called being circumcised let him not become uncircumcised is any called in uncircumcision let him not be circumcised circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing but the keeping of the commandments of God let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called some to consider because many of us are at varying levels within the faith that was clearly taught by Christ and the parable of the workers some come on in the third six ninth and twelfth hours but in again they're all judged indiscriminately and they're all paid exactly the same for in Christ Paul says and verse 6 neither circumcision or uncircumcision will avail you what does so faith which worketh by love what does that mean that means that we must have a faith that is driven by a love of our neighbor for God and in many ways our nation but also by default denotes that there are men who are driven to do what they do within Christendom no less not because they love and not because they have faith but because they want to justify themselves within the Word of God Paul says in verse 7 you did run well who did hinder you that you should not obey the truth now they went back to the Mosaic law and Paul says you're not obeying the truth why again the Mosaic law was not truth but truthful the gospel is truth don't believe me well turn with me back to 1st Corinthians chapter 9 and as you're going there notice also that Paul says here people can run well you could run the race the Galatians did they understood because they begun in the spirit pull put them there Paul taught the Gentile Galatians that they were free from the law of sin and death but it didn't stop false prophets even then sometimes genuine prophets like Peter from coming in and saying well you gotta be circumcised Paul says it doesn't matter whether you are or art at the end of the day you're judged according to your belief or faith notice first Corinthians but while you're there chapter 9 but verse 24 Paul says no you not that they all run in a race and run they all but only one receives the prize but therefore run so that you may obtain obtain what the price what is Paul saying if you're going to take your faith in your hands take it seriously if you're going to run the race don't do it for vanity don't do it for eco do it because you're fighting a spiritual battle now let me interject Christ clearly taught that no man will go to war without sitting down and first weighing the cost are we or are we not in a spiritual warfare being Christian soldiers indeed we are and Les Paul is lying in the conclusion of Ephesians why would we need to take the sword the shield the helmet etc so that's something to consider 1st Corinthians and the book of Galatians have many similarities and what's interesting is 2nd Corinthians and Ephesians have more in similar than person second Corinthians but something to consider it's verse 8 this persuasion comes not after him that calls you who to run only halfway to begin in the spirit be set free and say you know what well I'm gonna go back to the law okay look you can abstain from all the pork you want okay so it's a good idea but you won't be safe because you do and moreover to put pie on the face of the Pharisee oftentimes a man who has eaten pork his entire life but believes in Jesus Christ will be saved that is if you spiritually applied the teachings then he says right after verse eight here in Galatians chapter five a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump turn with me back to 1st Corinthians as we wind this down but the fifth chapter I really love this statement because it proves that Paul learned that from Christ your glowing is not good we learn in verse 6 of chapter 5 of first Corinthians know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump same thing basically he says in Galatians and what's interesting about this statement is after he makes it he explains it each time in both first Corinthians and Galatians pay close attention purge out therefore the old leaven that she may be a new lump as ye are unleavened for even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us truly love that for those that don't understand that Christ is to be our everything and want to come in and say hey I observed the Passover Christ is the Passover the Mosaic law is never going to save you Christ became the Tabernacles when he dwelt among man he became the Passover Christ is the Sabbath or the lord thereof Christ fulfilled Genesis to Malachi 100% he didn't do away with but the law is a schoolmaster to bring you to Christ Christ is not a schoolmaster to bring you back to the law that's not how it works so it's really great actually to be looking at some of these verses today he continues on back here he says let us keep our feast not with old leaven neither with the leaven of malice or wickedness but I wrote unto you not to keep company with fornicators but now I have written not to keep company may close attention if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator or covetous or an idolater or a drunkard or an extortioner with such an one eat not all basically is saying exactly what I've been espousing from this very venue and that pulpit behind me for years and that is you're better off in belief than hiding behind the law because there's no hiding behind the law we're guilty of the entirety of the law the second you think you're justified through it and we confirm that today galatians chapter 5 did we not well after he says this in verse 9 of galatians chapter 5 he continues as he did in first Corinthians he says I have confidence in you through the Lord that you will be none otherwise minded but he that troubles you shall bear his judgment whoever he be and I brethren if I yet preach circumcision why do I suffer persecution then it's the offence of the Cross ceased and as time is getting away from me I'm gonna point out one thing and we'll pick this back up in a week or so as we continue in the study and that is this many people still consider that cross in offense and while they sit there and defend their Confederate molten images of Robert ealier Andrew Jackson they want to condemn a man like me for having a picture of Christ upon a cross why is the cross so offensive to certain people when it's not even a graven image she doesn't even fulfill the requirements of what a graven image is something to think about but to them that are going to parish the preaching of the Cross is foolishness so that's really something we need to consider as we trudge forward my friends it's not going to get better it guarantees to get worse and I'll preach and be with you and as long as I have breath and so with that this is pastor Visser from Brooks Georgia and the covenant peoples church hoping you'll join me again next time and wishing your entire family great studies and god bless you amen
