Polygamy & Monogamy: The Debate Continues!

Can Christians have more than one wife?

I'm placing this here since I'm basing this off Isaiah 4:1.

    Two questions really.

First, is this verse saying (as I think it's saying) that polygamy will come back into practice on the advent of the Messianic Kingdom?

Secondly, is polygamy a godly practice? Is it a practical practice?

    Thanks for your answers.

    Scripture is pro-monogamy.

Those that say otherwise have polygamy in their heart (or minds).

Our Father is not the Author of confusion. A man should marry one wife.

1 Timothy 3:2, "A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;"
1 Peter 2:9, "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;"

    Re: Polygamy

I found the following CI explanation of the 7th commandment:

"Now the 7th commandment is to not commit adultery; the 10th commandment is to not covet ones neighbors wife; the two would be the same commandment. Therefore, it is obvious that the 7th is entirely different than the 10th which is to covet anothers wife.

Therefore, the following verses make much more sense when we realize that “Adultery” is the mixing of another race or people other than a brother or sister Israelite. "

But the same should apply to the 8th: 8). Thou shalt not steal.
Because the same same is 10th: 10). Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house.

Here is an alternative view of the 7th commandment.

jew Weiland basically states that the Law forbidding adultery covered all sexual sins, including miscegenation.

Gee, aren't the clergy to be an example to the church at large? Of course, for those who are of a mind to want to take on multiple wives and all of their children perhaps they need to have the experience. As for the argument about it curtailing extraneous sexual behavior, I doubt that would be the case. If a man is of the type that he can't or won't control himself, I doubt that mulitple wives is going to "fix" him - unless perhaps he is able to collect a giant, endless stable of them like David or Solomon and, if I recall correctly, that didn't work out so well for them either.

As for Isaiah 4:1, you might want to read the preceding chapters. I think that is referring to a state that will be existing when the judgment of Yahweh is upon them, it is not a positive thing.

Pastor Dan, who hosts By Yahweh's Design, is pro-polygamy but admits that his forays into this practice have ended unhappily.

God created Eve to be Adam's wife. If multiple wives had been His perfect will for Adam, then Eve would have brought some sisters along with her.

    Solomon had 700 wives..
    1 Kings 11:1-5

Abraham had Sarah and Hagar (Genesis 16:1-4)

Judges 8:30 - And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

Jacob had Rachel and Leah (Genesis 31:17)

Deuteronomy 17:17:Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

Deuteronomy 21:15:If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated:

I always took this as a bad thing...

1Ki 11:4; "It came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with Yahweh his God, as was the heart of David his father."

Even for a king, tending to 700 women would leave little time for God.
