Rice not so nice after posting homophobic slur on Twitter

Swimmer Stephanie Rice has apologised after reportedly posting a homophobic slur on Twitter.

Following the Wallabies' last-gasp win over South Africa on Saturday night, Rice tweeted: ''Suck on that faggots!''

But the queen of the pool, who recently withdrew from next month's Commonwealth Games with a shoulder injury, has since apologised and deleted the posting.

The comment attracted criticism from gay actor and former Australian rugby league star Ian Roberts, who labelled Rice a "complete idiot".

"She is an idiot ... and anyone who continues to endorse her as an athlete is an idiot as well," Roberts told News Ltd.

"And I say that with a very sad tone in my voice. What a fool."

Evangelist Benny Hinn recently admitted at a crusade in Oakland, Calif., to having a "friendship" with fellow minister Paula White while he's still married after a tabloid pictured them holding hands in Rome on July 13. But the well-known healing minister says the relationship is over.

...Hinn told the crowd in Oakland that the Vatican made him a Patron of the Arts and invited him to visit Rome. He said patrons are asked to find donors to help maintain the Vatican's art collections, and he wanted White to become a donor.

"I let her come with me to Rome so she can donate money," Hinn said. "That was stupid on my part. And for that I do ask forgiveness."

The National Enquirer published photos in its Aug. 2 issue of Hinn walking hand-in-hand with White in Rome. The article, which released July 23, claimed the two spent three nights in a five-star hotel Hinn booked under a false name.

Hinn said in Oakland that he and White found "common ground" after she appeared on This Is Your Day in late May. White and her ex-husband, Randy, went through a public divorce in 2007. She now leads the Tampa, Fla., church they founded, Without Walls International Church, and has her own national television show called Paula Today. ...

Man seeks bail to travel to Sudan

An HIV-positive man accused of endangering five women's lives with unprotected sex wants to be allowed to leave Australia to visit his sick mother in Sudan.

John Choul Chan, 40, of Findon, was in the South Australian District Court on five charges of endangering life between March 2004 and October 2008.

His lawyer Patricia McCrohan asked the court if Chan could visit his mother in Sudan because of her state of health.

She said he would return to Adelaide because he had a son here.

"Australia is his home," she said on Friday.

"He has had no other home for the last 20 or 30 years."

Prosecutor Andrew Wilson said he had concerns about Chan travelling to Sudan given the seriousness of the charges.

"He could easily disappear into the community over there (Sudan)," Mr Wilson said.
Judge Dean Clayton is considering allowing the travel but said he would require a guarantor to be found for the sum of $5,000.

God did not create the universe, says Hawking

LONDON, Sept 2 (Reuters) - God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.

In "The Grand Design," co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts Thursday.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking writes.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

Hawking, 68, who won global recognition with his 1988 book "A Brief History of Time," an account of the origins of the universe, is renowned for his work on black holes, cosmology and quantum gravity.

Since 1974, the scientist has worked on marrying the two cornerstones of modern physics -- Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which concerns gravity and large-scale phenomena, and quantum theory, which covers subatomic particles.

His latest comments suggest he has broken away from previous views he has expressed on religion. Previously, he wrote that the laws of physics meant it was simply not necessary to believe that God had intervened in the Big Bang.

He wrote in A Brief History ... "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we should know the mind of God."

In his latest book, he said the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting another star other than the Sun helped deconstruct the view of the father of physics Isaac Newton that the universe could not have arisen out of chaos but was created by God.

"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass, far less remarkable, and far less compelling evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he writes.

Hawking, who is only able to speak through a computer-generated voice synthesizer, has a neuro muscular dystrophy that has progressed over the years and left him almost completely paralyzed.

He began suffering the disease in his early 20s but went on to establish himself as one of the world's leading scientific authorities, and has also made guest appearances in "Star Trek" and the cartoons "Futurama" and "The Simpsons."

Last year he announced he was stepping down as Cambridge University's Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a position once held by Newton and one he had held since 1979.

"The Grand Design" is due to go on sale next week.

Cross dresser avoids jail over death

A cross-dressing Victorian P-plater who crashed, killing his girlfriend, has avoided jail after a judge found he would be subjected to bullying in prison.

Jayke Baldwin, 21, was speeding when he lost control of his car at Seville East in February 2009 and hit a tree.

His girlfriend of just two weeks Melissa Neylon was thrown from the car that then fell on her and killed her.

On Thursday, Victorian County Court judge Marilyn Harbison ruled that because of Baldwin's cross-dressing and effeminate presentation he would be bullied in jail.

Judge Harbison said Baldwin was bullied at work and school.

"(There is) a significant danger ... that you will be targeted by prisoners of your own age and subjected to physical attacks, even in the youth unit of prison," she said.

Judge Harbison ordered Baldwin, of Mt Evelyn, be jailed for three years, but wholly suspended the sentence for three years.

Judge Harbison said she accepted that a prison sentence would cause Baldwin "significant trauma".

She said the fact that Baldwin had Asperger's syndrome also influenced her decision to suspend the sentence.

Judge Harbison said the sentence was not a "totally appropriate" one.

Baldwin pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death.

Prosecutors have called for a sentence of up to four years with at least two years to be served in prison.

The maximum sentence for dangerous driving causing death is 10 years in prison.

Outside court, Ms Neylon's father Grant slammed the sentence and said he hoped it would be appealed.

"I disagree with it," he said.

"Very disappointed. It doesn't send any message to them (young drivers). They get a wholly suspended sentence, as long as they behave themselves then they are free to continue on. I don't think it sends a message at all.

"I expected he would serve some time."

The crash occurred about 500 metres from Ms Neylon's home.
Mr Neylon said his daughter was a bubbly, bright teenager who loved life and was due to begin university a few weeks later.

School bans 'gay' kookaburra

A Melbourne school has dropped the word gay from the classic children's song Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree.

Principal Garry Martin of Le Page Primary School in Cheltenham says instead of "Gay your life must be" the children now sing "Fun your life must be".

"All I was doing, relatively innocently, was substituting one word because I knew if we sing `Gay your life must be' the kids will roll around the floor in fits of laughter," Mr Martin told Fairfax Radio.

He said that at his school children sometimes used the word gay in a disparaging way in the schoolyard.

"For example, if a boy is not particularly good at sport and they will refer to that child as gay," he said.

"They have a vague idea how it can be used but they don't really know the full extent of it."

Earlier this year, the 75-year-old song was involved in a legal controversy over a riff used in the Men At Work international hit Down Under.

In an interview on the Nine Network, Mr Martin was backtracking on his decision, saying maybe he should have discussed the true meaning of the word with the children.

"In hindsight that is what I probably should have done, I just didn't realise the implications," he said.
"I wasn't trying to incite or insult gay people, or trying to violate copyright of Larrikin Music, it was just a decision at the time that I thought would minimise a disruptive atmosphere with grades one and and two."

Paris Hilton has been charged with cocaine possession.

The hotel heiress could face up to four years in prison after 0.8 grams of the illegal drug was found in her handbag when she and boyfriend Cy Waits were stopped and searched by police in Las Vegas on Friday night (27.08.10).

It has been claimed District Attorney David Roger - who is overseeing the case - is set to sentence the 29-year-old socialite to prison, because he "won't tolerate celebrities" who get into trouble.

A source told website RadarOnline.com: "Roger won't tolerate celebrities coming to Las Vegas and thinking they can get away with illegal behaviour. It's going to be extremely difficult for Paris to get out of these charges, even with the brilliant legal skills of her lawyer, David Chesnoff."

She is due in court on October 27 over the felony possession of a controlled substance charge, which was filed in court by the Clark County District Attorney's Office.

Paris was stopped by officers on Friday during a night out with Cy - who has been charged with drunk-driving and is due in court on November 29 - after police noticed an "odour of marijuana" coming out of the vehicle.

The police report from one of the officers at the scene states: "Hilton said she needed to put some lip balm on, and I handed her the purse from the table. As she began to open it, I saw a small bundle of what I believed to be cocaine in a clear baggy begin to fall from the purse and into my hand."

After her arrest, the reality TV star told officers she had borrowed the handbag from a friend, that it contained several make-up items which were not hers, and she thought the cocaine was chewing gum.

Paris has already been arrested twice this year for drug-related offences, but her attorney has urged people not to jump to conclusions.

He said in a statement: "This matter will be dealt with in the courts, not in the media, and I encourage people not to rush to judgment until all of the facts have been dealt with in a court of law."

NZ 'Aryan' licence plate not racist

New Zealand officials have allowed a motorist to keep her licence plate "ARYAN 1" because it was intended as a gesture of affection towards her former partner, not a statement of white supremacy.

The NZ Transport Agency investigated the plate after a member of the public complained that the term "Aryan", used by Hitler's Nazis to describe the so-called "master race", was offensive, the Dominion Post newspaper reported on Tuesday.

But the plate's owner, Wellington woman Lisa Marie Thompson, successfully argued in favour of keeping the plate, saying it simply comprised the initial and surname of her former boyfriend - Andrew Ryan - and had no racial overtones.

The NZTA found that banning the plate would impinge on Thompson's right to free speech.

"NZTA finds racism and racist speech as abhorrent as all right-thinking New Zealanders, which is why this was not an easy decision to make," it said in a statement.

"However, we consider that the original decision not to require the surrender of the plate was correct."

Thompson told the Dominion Post she had no idea about the connotations of the word Aryan when she bought the plate four years ago and still did not see why displaying it on her car could be considered offensive.

"I've had it for years and I don't see the problem with it. It would be no different to having `Maori Pride'," she said referring to New Zealand's indigenous population.
The newspaper said examples of licence plates the NZTA had banned included "DRGDLR" and "TAMPON".

Solar System older than thought: study

The Solar System could be nearly two million years older than thought, according to a study published by the journal Nature Geoscience.

The evidence comes from a 1.49-kilo meteorite found in the Moroccan desert in 2004 that contains a "relict" mineral, which is one of the oldest solid materials formed after the birth of the Sun.

Analysis of lead isotopes suggest the mineral was formed 4.45682 billion years ago, making the meteorite the oldest object ever found.
As a result, the Solar System is likely to be between 300,000 and 1.9 million years older than previous estimates, says the paper, authored by Audrey Bouvier and Meenakshi Wadhwa of Arizona State University's Centre for Meteorite Studies.
